About All of Us

The Minority Student Research Symposium (MSRS) Symposium with the All of Us Research Program invited underrepresented minorities (URMs) to participate in completing a research project using data from the All of Us Research Hub and presenting their work in a virtual poster session during a symposium Saturday, May 22, 2021.

Greater participation of all racial and ethnic groups is needed in biomedical research. URMs represent over 30% of the U.S. population but less than 9% of STEM PhD members and 7% of all physicians. We know that diversification of the biomedical workforce will help address the critical need the U.S. faces to reduce racial and ethnic health and health care disparities.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

The Minority Student Research Symposium (MSRS) is designed to take meeting attendees on an engagement experience through completing actions pre, during and post meeting like posting photos, answering polls, downloading documents and networking with other attendees. Attendees will be recognized throughout the meeting. Engagement with student scholars in chat is highly encourage.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD

Vote on your favorite poster, poster rubrics can be found in each research category exhibit booth to assist you with evaluating each scholar’s work.

ACCESSIBILITY

We are committed to making the MSRS accessible to the widest range of people as possible. Where physical and communication barriers do not exclude people with disabilities from attending and participating.

  • Sessions will be recorded and captioned for post-meeting viewing
  • Accessibility questions are included in the registration to identify special needs and requests
  • Slide decks from presentations are available in advance by request

SPEAKERS

Find out who’s presenting at the MSRS! Connect with speakers and scholars during and post meeting to follow up on ideas and learnings. Click on the photo of each speaker in the Agenda section above to learn more.

EXHIBIT HALL

The Exhibit Hall will feature student scholars research posters created using the All of Us Data Browser, increased collaborations amongst minority researcher, and opportunities for networking. The first 6 booths are representative of the 6 research topics focused on by the MSRS Scholars. The Exhibit Hall will be open one hour before the formal meeting starts. The Exhibit Hall will also feature many community partners with highlighted opportunities from ORISE program at Booth 7.

This symposium was created to answer the All of Us Southern Network’s community engagement lead and BGLC (Black Greek Letter Consortium) collaboration and call to action to address a lack of representation of underrepresented minority populations in biomedical research.
  • African American / Black
  • Asian: Filipino, Hmong*, or Vietnamese only
  • Asian: Filipino, Hmong*, or Vietnamese only
  • Hispanic / Latinx
  • Native American / Alaskan Native
  • Native Hawaiian / Other Pacific Islander
All levels of scholarship: undergraduate, graduate, and medical/professional students are welcome. We require all students to work with a mentor to develop their poster presentation.
Underrepresented minorities (URM) are more likely than others to be familiar with and highly motivated to ameliorate health issues faced by their demographic groups; therefore, expanding the number of minority researchers is expected to importantly contribute to reducing racial/ethnic-related disparities. Finally, the importance of a diverse biomedical workforce is supported further by a significant body of evidence indicating that diversity strengthens the STEM talent pool and ultimately contributes to greater innovation and productivity in research settings in which team members engage in cooperative problem-solving. [Cited from: McGee Jr, R., Saran, S., & Krulwich, T. A. (2012). Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce: Developing Talent. We are inviting all URMs to participate in completing a research project using data from the All of Us Research Hub and presenting their work in a virtual poster session during a symposium in spring 2021. This symposium consists of 4 major activities: an introductory session about the AoU research hub with speakers from the All of Us community engagement and BGLC, an informational session about the student symposium, a cadence meeting to track all participants and ensure they have received proper training, and a culminating event of a three day series of symposiums at each scholarship level. The series will take place 3-4 months after the informational session is released to the public. BGLC and All of Us engagement will lead efforts in marketing and promoting these activities. All participating scholars will have to also identify a mentor to work with them on their project (We will identify a limited number of mentors for students who have difficulty with this process). Awards and prize money will be given to the top 2 scholars each student level. The judges will have representation from each engagement consortium (ideally composed of a scientist and community member) within the All of Us program.
Greater participation of all racial and ethnic groups is needed in biomedical research. URMs represent over 30% of the U.S. population but less than 9% of STEM PhD members and 7% of all physicians. Promoting this event has the potential to increase retention in undergraduate students and self-efficacy in research activity as well as influence the number of URMs that enter post-graduate and medical education.
